The Adventures of Anne: a semi-retired bookkeeper, mother of 4, grandmother of several, recently widowed

Friday, January 26, 2007

I guess I had better get busy. Lots has happened since January 5. One thing was a weekend trip to Fond du Lac to bowl in the WWBA tournament. We bowled 9 games, three on Saturday and six on Sunday. For an "elderly" bowler, I think I did OK for myself. The average of all nine games was 153. Since then, I have had some very good bowling in league. Did a 496 when we returned from State and had a 500 series this past Tuesday. If I keep that up, I will soon be back to my old form and better average of 160 or so. Right now, I'm pushing 150.

Still waiting for the roofers. We have had too much snow for them to contend with lately. It will get done when it gets done.

My volunteering continues and it keeps me on the go. Today it will be just the afternoon session of Bingo at the Care Center. After that I have been asked to "Wave the Fish" at the St. Jerome Fish Fry dinner from 4:30 to 7:30. I should really be hungry after that!!! Will probably bring my fish dinner home to sit down and enjoy.

The Australian Open has kept me glued to the TV at times. It will be interesting tonight to see if Serena Williams (ranked #81) can play better than Maria Sharapova (ranked #2). She may have made it to #1 now that Amelia Moresmo has been knocked out of the tournament. That comes on at 8:30, so I will not be up all night watching. How I do enjoy watching tennis.

We are due for a cold snap this weekend, but no snow is predicted, except for flurries. Peggy and I will plan to attend the Memorial Service for Dr. Robert Ashley at Ripon College.

More later.

The Magi Arrive tomorrow

The mailman brought me a package two days ago. It was a hand held Sudoku from Ruth Anne and David. Now I won't have to cut them out of the newspaper, I can just pull out my new toy. Thank you, Ruth Anne and David.

Today there was a call from a BD florist. Would I be at home. Yes, until 2 PM. We will see you before that time. The doorbell rang about noon and there was a tremendous bouquet meeting my eyes. Lovely roses, carnations, tulips, asters, baby's breathe and some greenery. Most beautiful arrangement I have seen in quite some time. Thanks for being so thoughtful, RA & D.

Tomorrow is lining up to be pretty full. I am going to play bridge with my partner Judy Wolfgram against Jim Fritchen and his partner Wayne Purves. They can really play bridge and the last time we played, they really put it to us. We lost by such a hugh score it wasn't funny.

Maybe tomorrow we will fare better.
Late afternoon Mass, then out to dinner at the Capri. So I guess I'll miss the playoff games unless I tape them. I will be cheering for the Eagles over the Giants, however.

NIghty-night.

Back from Bowling

Just back from the new alleys and did not bowl much more than my average, which is now 144. Lost first two games, won the third, so we only took 2 points of the 7 awarded each night. First game was 5 pins under average, other two were over average. The new alleys are very noisey and I usually come home with a slight headache. This may be my last year if they don't do something to abate the noise.

Tomorrow is Wednesday--Mass at the Care Center in the AM and BINGO there in the PM. Run errands before going out there in the AM. Keeps me out of mischief.

I made a pot of turkey noodle soup yesterday and the house smelled delicious!! Put some of it in the freezer for when (and if) we ever get cold weather. It is difficult to realize that this is winter--the weather has been so very mild. No snow on the ground, either.

Shopped at WalMart today. Bought a new watch band which I put on after bowling, some material to knit an afghan for Annie (purple, of course) and some of the black fuzzy material to knit a boa for myself. I had made one for Mary for Christmas, and I really like it.

Time to close for tonight. It is late.

The Lost is Found

I'm here, finally, with many thanks to Peggy, my guru.

Recovered Post - Go Bookie

Note: I have recovered this for Mom - who keeps making new blogs....I have to just figure out what she's doing. Peggy

Hi everyone. I think I have it now and can get back to blogging. After the last entry, there was a trip to California to see Kate, Paul, and Nicki. She took her first real steps while I was there. G0t home before Thanksgiving to await the roofers. I am still waiting. The delay is due to all the rain that we have had in Wisconsin. Advent came and I was able to help the Liturgy Committee decorate both for Advent and Christmas. It was a little each weekend, so when the children's Christmas pageant was over, we could really finish the job. That came after the early Mass on the 24th, since it was still Advent. The Church is beautiful in all the garlands, poinsettias, and gold ribbons. The Manger we used was a very large one, and it had to be placed on the 24th also. All in all, it is a nice feeling to know you had a hand in making things so lovely for the congregation. Christmas this year was most different for me. Peggy came to Mass with me, we came back and had a nice breakfast, opened a few gifts then headed out to the movies.

Did you get that? Movies on Christmas!!!!! Peggy told me that was what people did. It was a first for me, since I usually was in the kitchen getting a turkey dinner ready for everyone. We saw "Charlotte's Web" and I did enjoy it very much. Now I will get the book from the library and read it. The children had it read to them in school by their teachers.

After the movie, we came back, made a steak dinner while Peggy hooked up my new kitchen TV and the two year old DVD player. WE had a most pleasant day. Peggy left to feed the animals so I came up to play with my new computer. The day after Christmas, the Gronholz Family joined me for the day. They came early and filled the house with music of all kinds. Jake on his new guitar and Mary and Stefanie played the piano for me. Mary got a new music book for Christmas and wanted to try it out. We all enjoyed the turkey dinner, especially Jake. He really enjoys my mashed potatoes!!. They left early as Stefanie had a basketball practice and since it was Tuesday, I had bowling. Did okay for a change. Made my average all three games. That was the first this season. Thursday was a work day for me at Mary's office. Trying to get things ready for the year end. Will continue that tomorrow. Went out and played bridge on New Year's Eve with three other widows. They invited me to join them at the Capri, but I had already begun my dinner. They called me when they got home and I went and played. They told me I was a life saver, since their usual 4th had taken sick that day.

So here I am again, beginning a new year like everyone else. It is Nicki's birthday today. She must be celebrating with her family here. Isn't that special!!! Watched the Rose Bowl Parade and the Wisconsin game. Saw parts of the Michigan game as I was putting a jigsaw puzzle together. It is one I received in 2005 that had never been opened. That tells you how busy I have been. I wish all of you a very happy new year. May you all enjoy many blessings from the Lord.

Good night.
